History of Ramraj cotton

Ramraj Cotton was founded in 1983 by K.R. Nagarajan as Ramraj Khadi Traders, a small office in Tirupur, with the aim of popularizing the traditional Indian dhoti. Ramraj Khadi Traders began operations with a table and chair as its only furniture. It transpired that K.R. Nagarajan felt pity for the weavers living in the Tirupur area due to their precarious livelihood situation. He founded Ramraj Khadi Traders to use the money earned from selling dhotis to help them. K.R. Nagarajan named the company “Ramraj” using the letters in both his name (Nagarajan) and his father’s name (Ramaswamy). In 1987, cotton replaced khadi in the company, after which Ramraj Khadi Traders changed its name to Ramraj Cotton. Now the brand focuses on premium cotton clothing.

Between 1989 and 1994, they expanded their product range to include white shirts, innerwear, men’s kurtas, and many other men’s apparel. In 1999, the brand opened its first exclusive showroom in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu. Subsequently, prior to the “Salute Ramraj” campaign in 2001, the brand opened exclusive showrooms in several locations across South India, a number of which is now increasing.

In 2019, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore a Ramraj cotton dhoti during a high-profile meeting with Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping in Mamallapuram.
