NEWS

On Saturday, September 11th, UFC 279 Prelims will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, featuring the greatest names in MMA. As usual, this UFC pay-per-view will likely be entertaining from beginning to end.

Unsurprisingly, the welterweight main event between Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz is anticipated by the majority of fans. However, there are other fascinating fights, including those on the preliminary and early preliminary cards.

Here are the odds and predictions for the forthcoming UFC 279 preliminary and early preliminary bouts.

Preliminary UFC 279 Card and Odds (Odds as of Friday, September 9)

The odds shown here for UFC 279 are provided by OKBET MMA Sportsbook.

Featherweight: Hakeem Dawodu (-225) vs. Julian Erosa (+172)

Hakeem Dawodu (13-2-1) has steadily improved since entering the UFC in 2018. After losing his debut, he has gone 6-1 in his remaining seven fights, most recently defeating Michael Trizano by unanimous decision in his most recent contest.

In contrast, Julian Erosa (27-9) is also on a roll, going 5-1 in his previous six appearances. Since his 1-3 UFC debut, he has gone a long way, but only time will tell whether he can continue to produce favorable outcomes.

The fact that Dawodu has gone the distance in each of his previous four bouts and won three of them gives me hope that he will do it again.

Hakeem Dawodu by Decision (+145) is the best wager.

Catchweight (220lbs): Jailton Almeida (-850) vs. Anton Turkalj (+500)

In his forthcoming bout, Jailton Almeida (16-2) enters UFC 279 as the overwhelming favorite. Before this weekend, he had won 11 consecutive bouts, including four of the past five via submission.

Anton Turkalj (8-0) has meantime been unstoppable. Five of his eight first-round wins were through KO/TKO or submission. However, his opponent has more experience than he has.

Almeida may be too much for Turkalj to handle, resulting in a KO/TKO victory.

Jailton Almeida by KO/TKO (+250) is the best bet.

Middleweight: Denis Tiuliulin (+108) vs. Jamie Pickett (-138)

Denis Tiuliulin (9-6, 1NC) has shown excellent play on occasion, but not recently. In two of his previous three battles, the 34-year-old veteran has been defeated via submission.

Jamie Pickett (13-7) has won two consecutive bouts before to being submitted by Kyle Daukaus in February of this year.

In the end, this bout should be equally balanced, and I could see Pickett emerging victorious. He seemed solid before to the Daukaus defeat, so I anticipate that he will return to form.

Best Bet: Jamie Pickett Outright (-138)

Jake Collier (-430) vs Chris Barnett (+300) at heavyweight.

Jake Collier (13-7) is a prohibitive favorite in the sole heavyweight contest at UFC 279. Since 2014, the 33-year-old experienced boxer has alternated victories and defeats, most recently losing by split decision to Andrei Arlovski five months ago.

Meanwhile, Chris Barnett (22-8) is coming off a defeat to Martin Buday by technical decision. Since returning to the heavyweight class, he has lost two of his past three bouts, showing that he may not be able to handle Collier.

Best Bet: Jake Collier by KO/TKO (+180)

Early Preliminary Card and Odds for UFC 279

Norma Dumont (-400) faces Danyelle Wolf (+285) in the women’s featherweight division.
Norma Dumont (7-2) has had recent success, having won three of her previous four bouts that reached the distance. Now, she must face former amateur boxing gold winner Danyelle Wolf (1-1) in her second MMA bout.

Until further notice, I’m inclined to support Dumont. Time will tell whether she can withstand Wolf’s assault, given her experience and recent appearance of strength.

Decision favors Norma Dumont as the best wager (-120)

Bantamweight: Alateng Heili (-180) vs. Chad Anheliger (+140)

Recent performances for Alateng Heili (15-8-2) have been inconsistent, as he has gone 1-1-1 in his previous three bouts. In spite of this, he defeated Kevin Croom by TKO in his final bout.

Chad Anheliger (12-5) seems to be in his way, though. Anheliger has won 10 consecutive matches, leaving some bettors perplexed as to why he is the underdog in this match.

Although this fight might go any way, I’m picking Anheliger to pull off the upset.

Best Bet: Chad Anheliger Outright (+140)

Women’s Strawweight: Elise Reed (+138) vs. Melissa Martinez (-178)

Elise Reed (5-2) has failed to establish consistency in her previous battles, suffering two TKO defeats in her past three bouts. Melissa Martinez (7-0), who has scored five knockouts in her career, makes things more difficult.

Given Reed’s recent troubles and Martinez’s hard-hitting style, I’m betting on Martinez to win by KO/TKO at UFC 279.

Best Bet: Melissa Martinez by KO/TKO (+420)

Welterweight: Darian Weeks (-130) vs. Yohan Lainesse (+102)

Darian Weeks’ (5-2) MMA career began with a perfect 5-0 record, however he has since lost consecutive bouts via unanimous decision. Yohan Lainesse (8-1) similarly started his career undefeated, however he lost his last bout against Gabriel Green by TKO in April.

Given that Lainesse has a UFC victory while Week does not, I’m inclined to agree with the former.

Best Bet: Yohan Lainesse Outright (+102)
