Rafael dos Anjos, the former lightweight champion and current contender in the UFC welterweight division, is preparing to make his comeback.
Among MMA fans, Rafael dos Anjos is perhaps best remembered as a former lightweight UFC champion. In 2015 and 2016, he dominated at 155 pounds. After being dethroned, dos Anjos chose to give his career a fresh start by switching weight classes to 170. Although he was successful there, he eventually moved back to his original weight class of lightweight. Having lost to Rafael Fiziev at UFC Vegas 58, his future in the UFC seemed uncertain.
Recently, dos Anjos said that he has accepted the possibility that his championship hopes are doomed. He described how he plans to seek out exciting fights, and it seems he may have found one. Raphael Marinho, the current champion, recently confirmed his next fight on Combate.com. It’s not a household name, but don’t let that fool you; this rival is no pushover.
On December 3, Rafael dos Anjos will fight Bryan Barberena in a heavyweight bout.
Reports have it that dos Anjos and Bryan Barberena will square off on December 3. The Amway Center in Orlando, Florida is the location for the newly announced event.
This fight may be the main event of the show; dos Anjos has headlined the main card of his past two fight nights. His most recent run at welterweight was a roller coaster of wins and defeats. Because of his hard work, he earned an opportunity at the interim championship and met Colby Covington, whom he ultimately lost to. He finished his career with a record of 4-4 while weighing 170 pounds.
As of UFC 276, Barberena was on a three-fight winning run, having most recently knocked out Robbie Lawler. As of this writing, dos Anjos is rated seventh in the lightweight class, while Barberena is unranked in the welterweight division. It’s a huge chance to start climbing the rankings by knocking out another former UFC champion.
