Ben Rothwell, a former UFC heavyweight, has stated why he chose the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) over the Professional Fighters League (PFL).

In spite of being scheduled to fight Alexander Gustafsson in May, word came in March that Rothwell has sought his release from the UFC. “Big Ben’s” 13-year, 17-fight tenure inside the Octagon came to an end when his attempts to leave were successful.

Rothwell’s pursuit by other organizations was predictable, given his prominence in the sport, and it was immediately publicized that he had agreed to remove his gloves and compete for BKFC.

A number of big stars have recently abandoned the Octagon for the PFL’s SmartCage. While the obvious example previous to this year would have been former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, a few competitors have recently relinquished positions in the rankings in order to join with the burgeoning promotion.

Shane Burgos’s determination to pursue other opportunities after completing his contract led him to the PFL. Following his defeat to Jamaal Hill, former UFC light heavyweight championship contender Thiago Santos followed suit.

But although “Hurricane” mentioned financial stability as his motive for joining the PFL, it seems that Rothwell has stated the same reason for declining the promotion.

Rothwell: “BKFC Offers Greater Assurances.”

“Big Ben” signed a contract to engage in bare-knuckle boxing, following in the footsteps of Paige VanZant and Mike Perry as opposed to Burgos. BKFC has also signed former UFC competitors Felice Herrig, John Dodson, and Greg Hardy after Rothwell’s signing.

Rothwell discussed in a recent interview with The MMA-Holes why he chose a bare-knuckle enterprise over continuing his mixed martial arts career in the PFL. “Big Ben” indicated that BKFC provides him with a more secure income, citing the amount of victories necessary to achieve the MMA promotion’s $1 million prize pool.

Rothwell said, “My fighting style fits well with BKFC, and this is a chance to attract viewers who like knockouts and hitting.” “The PFL stipulates, ‘Hey, if you win X, Y, and Z, you earn a million dollars.’ However, you must make that happen.

“Well, this is just more certain. I have a contract with them, so I know what to expect when I show up. This is quite thrilling to me. Rothwell continued, “I can just fight my heart and it doesn’t matter what happens.”

After a lengthy delay, Rothwell’s promotional debut has finally been scheduled. “Big Ben” will face Bobo O’Bannon at BKFC 30, scheduled for Saturday, October 1 in Monroe, Louisiana.
